Feeding Iguanas and Other Herbivores
The following charts show the total quantity of calcium, phosphorus and vitamins A and C in 1 cup portions of selected foods. The total milligram amount of calcium is important when selecting a food; however, the ratio of calcium to phosphorus is also important. The ratio for most herbivorous (plant eating) reptiles should be approximately 2:1. Foods eaten in this ratio will promote absorption of calcium for bone growth and maintenance. A selected food source with a higher amount of phosphorus compared to calcium will decrease the amount of calcium absorbed into the body.
